Michael J. Kaempf, MD

Dr. Michael KaempfDr. Kaempf graduated from the University of Oregon in 1968 and went on to graduate from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1972. He completed his internship and urology residency at the University of Southern California - LA County Medical Center in 1977. In 1979, Dr. Kaempf became board certified in adult and pediatric urology. He was elected as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1981. In 2001 he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor medical society. For the past five years (2004-2008), Dr. Kaempf has been recognized as one of the Top Docs in Portland Monthly Magazine. In addition, for the past two years (2007-2008) Dr. Kaempf has been listed as one of America’s Top Urologists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Dr. Kaempf has had a longstanding interest in prostate cancer, publishing his first article in 1976. He also has a history of firsts in prostate cancer treatment:

  • In 1982 he did the first interstitial brachytherapy for prostate cancer in Oregon
  • In 1991 he performed the first laparoscopic surgery for prostate cancer in Oregon
  • He was among the first in Oregon to perform a daVinci robot assisted prostatectomy and performed the first in the Legacy Health System

Dr. Kaempf has been a member of many local and national medical societies including the Oregon Association of Transplant Surgeons, American Fertility Society, American Society of Andrology, Oregon Medical Association and American Medical Association. He has been active in both community and medical affairs - locally, statewide and nationally. Positions Dr. Kaempf has held include the following:

  • Served as president of the Oregon Urologic Association and was membership chairman of the Northwest Urologic Society
  • Board member of OMPRO/Acumentra since 1984, member of the Oregon Quality Improvement Organization, serving as the chairman of the board in 2004-5
  • Served as a director of the Multnomah County American Cancer Society
  • Founding partner of Americas Doctor, a national urology clinical research company, participating in numerous clinical studies of prostate cancer
  • Oregon Urologic representative to the Medicare Carrier Advisory committee since 1993
  • Oregon representative to the National Medicare Carrier Advisory committee for the American Association of Clinical Urologists
